Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid or paste is then applied to a surface—often prepared wood or hardboard, though canvas and other materials are often used.

Karen Day is a contemporary Canadian artist residing on Vancouver Island. 

She has travelled extensively in South America, resided in Northern Mexico, and visits the United Kingdom yearly. She has created and sold thousands of both functional and fine art pieces in a wide array of media that includes textiles, plaster, encaustic & acrylics. 

Karen is currently producting a large body of work in Encaustic painting that reflext her lifelong love of the West Coast Canadian rainforest. 

She has been influenced by the artist Frida Kahlo, as well as Diego Rivera, who also worked in the encaustic method.
